MP4 vs MKV vs WebM vs MOV vs WMV vs AVI for Screen Recording

MP4, MKV, WebM, MOV, WMV, and AVI are containers: they organize video, audio, timing, and metadata. The letters at the end of a filename do not determine quality by themselves. Codec, frame rate, resolution, compression, and the next application in your workflow matter more.

Short recommendation: Choose MP4 for everyday recording and sharing. Choose MKV when you need Free Screencast’s lossless remux into a resilient general container. Choose WebM for VP9/Opus web workflows. Use MOV, WMV, or AVI when another application specifically expects that container.

Container versus codec

A container is like a package. A codec is the method used to encode the pictures or sound inside it. Free Screencast’s MP4 path uses H.264 video and AAC audio. Its WebM path uses VP9 and Opus. Other export choices use the bundled FFmpeg media pipeline to create the selected compatibility format.

Renaming video.mp4 to video.avi does not convert it. Use an actual export or remux operation so the file structure matches the extension.

MP4: the default for most people

Best for: tutorials, support videos, presentations, playback on Windows, and common sharing services.

MP4 with H.264/AAC has broad support and a good quality-to-size balance. Hardware encoding can be used where supported. If you do not have a specific delivery requirement, start here with 30 FPS and the default compression.

MKV: flexible container and lossless remux option

Watch for: some editing, presentation, or upload software accepts MP4 more readily. Check the destination before choosing MKV.

WebM: modern web-oriented delivery

Best for: HTML video and workflows that request VP9 video with Opus audio.

WebM is designed for web media and can deliver efficient compression. It is a useful deliberate choice when the website, browser pipeline, or recipient asks for it.

Watch for: older desktop editors and business applications may not support WebM as consistently as MP4.

MOV: editing and Apple-oriented workflows

Best for: a downstream editor or media workflow that explicitly requests a QuickTime MOV container.

MOV is common in professional media interchange. On a Windows screen-recording task, it is usually a compatibility decision rather than an automatic quality upgrade.

Watch for: container choice alone does not make footage “professional quality.” Confirm what codec the receiving editor expects.

WMV: legacy Windows compatibility

Best for: older Windows-centric systems, templates, or enterprise software that specifically requests WMV.

WMV remains useful when compatibility with a known legacy destination is more important than a modern general-purpose workflow.

Watch for: it is not the first choice for a new cross-platform publishing pipeline. Test playback on the actual destination.

AVI: compatibility for specialized or older tools

Best for: an older editor, analyzer, or import tool whose documented input is AVI.

AVI is an established container with many possible internal codecs. That flexibility is also why the extension alone tells you little about size or compatibility.

Watch for: AVI can be less convenient for modern streaming and web delivery. Prefer MP4 unless AVI solves a concrete requirement.

Three tests before a long recording

  1. Record 20 seconds with screen motion and sound.
  2. Open the result in the exact editor, player, or upload service you will use.
  3. Seek near the end, check audio synchronization, and inspect small text.

This tiny compatibility test is more valuable than assuming a familiar extension will work in every pipeline.
