How to Schedule a Screen Recording on Windows

Scheduled recording is useful when an event starts while you are away from the keyboard or when the same capture must run every day. A reliable schedule needs more than a start time: the source must still exist, the PC must stay awake, the recorder must remain running, and the stop rule must be explicit.

Scheduled start, countdown, and auto-stop are different

These controls solve three separate problems:

• Scheduled recording chooses a future date and clock time for an automatic start.
• Countdown delays a manual start by 3, 5, or 10 seconds. No countdown starts immediately.
• Stop automatically ends an ordinary recording after a chosen number of minutes. When it is off, recording continues until you stop it manually.

A scheduled job has its own duration so it can finish without supervision.

1. Prepare a dependable capture source

Choose and test the recording source before setting the schedule. A display is the most dependable choice when window titles or application instances may change. Window capture is cleaner, but the exact window must remain available. A region works well for a fixed dashboard or player area as long as display scaling and layout do not change.

Open the application, sign in if needed, and navigate to the correct view. Avoid relying on a page that may log out or show a consent dialog while unattended.

2. Configure audio, format, and storage

Select System audio if the event includes sound played by Windows. Enable Microphone only when the unattended recording genuinely needs sound from the room; otherwise leave it off. Choose MP4 and 30 FPS for a practical general-purpose result.

Check the output folder and available disk space. Use the displayed MB-per-minute estimate multiplied by the scheduled duration, then leave extra headroom because motion can increase final size.

3. Create the schedule

1. Open Settings and find Scheduled recording.
2. Enable the schedule.
3. Select the calendar date.
4. Enter the hour and minute. The labels include units so the fields are not ambiguous.
5. Choose Once for a single job or Daily for a repeating one.
6. Enter the recording duration in minutes.
7. Confirm that the displayed next-recording time is correct.

Use the time shown by Windows on that PC. If you travel or change the system time zone, review the next-run display.

4. Keep the PC ready

Free Screencast must remain running, although it can stay in the notification area. Do not shut down, sign out, or allow the computer to sleep before the start time. Keep a laptop connected to power and configure Windows power settings for the unattended period.

Prevent disruptive restarts. Finish pending Windows updates before an important event rather than indefinitely disabling security updates. Turn on Do Not Disturb and close private applications because a full-display recording can capture notifications.

5. Run a short rehearsal

Before an important session, create a schedule five minutes in the future with a one- or two-minute duration. Leave the app in the notification area and observe the entire cycle. Verify:

• the recording starts at the displayed time;
• the intended source and audio are present;
• the file stops after the configured duration;
• the video appears in the Library and plays correctly;
• a Daily schedule advances to the next day.

Common reasons a scheduled capture fails

• The PC slept: change sleep settings for the event window.
• The app was closed: keep Free Screencast running in the notification area.
• The selected window disappeared: reopen it before the start or use Display/Region.
• The page requires interaction: dismiss login, cookie, update, and playback prompts during rehearsal.
• No sound: confirm the selected output device is the one used during the event.
• Not enough space: shorten the duration, raise compression, or choose a drive with more free capacity.

Responsible recording

Only record meetings, streams, cameras, or other content when you have permission and when recording complies with applicable rules. Scheduling removes supervision, not responsibility. Review the result for private information before sharing it.
