How to Record One Window on Windows 11 Without Capturing Everything Else

Recording one application window is safer and cleaner than capturing the entire desktop. It keeps unrelated notifications, icons, and open documents out of the video while letting you switch to notes or controls outside the captured app.

When window-only recording is the right choice

Use window capture for a browser tutorial, spreadsheet walkthrough, code editor demonstration, or a focused application bug report. Viewers see the complete chosen window without the rest of the desktop. It also reduces the chance of recording a private notification or a second app accidentally opened during narration.

Use full-display capture instead when the lesson depends on moving among several applications. Use region capture when only one fixed panel inside a large window matters.

1. Open the application and place it at the size you want in the final video.
2. Open Free Screencast and select Window under Capture source.
3. Select Choose window. Move the pointer across the desktop.
4. Wait for the red target outline to surround the intended window, then click once.

6. Enable System audio or Microphone only if the recording needs them.
7. Choose MP4, 30 FPS, and a suitable compression level, then start.

Prepare the application before capture

Window capture follows the chosen window, so its size and layout matter. Increase text size before recording instead of asking viewers to zoom afterward. A text-heavy application usually does not benefit from 60 FPS. Use 30 FPS for forms, settings, documents, and most browser tutorials. If the window occupies only part of a high-resolution display, Window mode also avoids encoding unused desktop pixels.

Start near the default compression setting and inspect small text at 100% playback size. Raise compression for a smaller file; reduce it if thin fonts or code become soft. The displayed MB-per-minute figure adjusts to the selected source, frame rate, compression, and audio, but real motion still changes the final result.

Common problems

• The wrong window was selected: use Choose window again and click only when the red outline matches the whole target.
• A popup is missing: the popup may be a separate window. Record a region around both surfaces or use Display mode.
• The preview is black: refresh the source, restore the application, and avoid minimized or protected-content windows.
